It is for couples who prefer their romance with the lights off and a bit of mystery about it — and it is deliberately not a set of declarations. The evening ends on one thing you agree to actually do this year, written down on a card, which is a far better test of an evening than anything either of you says at the time.

Created as part of The Midnight Lovers Ritual, this edition invites you to create an intimate after-dark ritual of velvet atmosphere, closeness and deliberate attention to one another - but the real sequence is kept for the moment the box is open and the room has gone quiet. Safety and responsible use

The massage oil, the lotion and the bath soak are skin and bath products: use each one only as its own label directs, and stop if it causes irritation or discomfort. Patch-test if skin is sensitive. The massage oil is for the body, not the face, and not for use in bath water. None of them is a medicine or a treatment. The teas are food: check the ingredients on the packet if anybody has an allergy, and check the caffeine content before drinking either of them late.

The candles:

  • Never leave a burning candle unattended.
  • Keep away from children and pets.
  • Keep away from draughts, curtains and flammable materials.
  • Place on a stable, heat-resistant surface.
  • Do not move while lit or while wax is hot.
  • Extinguish fully before leaving the room or going to sleep.
  • Follow the candle manufacturer's burn-time and wick instructions.
  • Burn incense only in the holder or bowl supplied, on a heat-proof surface, in a ventilated room. Never leave it burning unattended and never use it near curtains or bedding.
  • Do not use incense around anybody with asthma or a respiratory condition without checking first, and never around babies or pets in the same room.
  • Bath products make a bath and its surfaces slippery. Take care getting in and out, and do not take a bath by candlelight alone.
  • The pendants, bracelets and stones are not toys and are not for children.
  • Keep every item, and all packaging, away from babies, children and pets.
  • Retain the manufacturer’s packaging and instructions.

Follow the original instructions supplied with every item. Do not ingest, inhale, burn, heat, apply to the skin or place any item in food, drink or bathwater unless the manufacturer's packaging expressly confirms that use. Keep candles, small objects, fragranced products and packaging away from children and pets. Never leave a flame unattended. Stop using any product that causes irritation or discomfort.

What this is, and what it is not

This is a candle, a drink, some incense, a deck of printed questions and a few things worth keeping, put together so that one evening has a shape to it. It is a gift, not a service and not a course. Nobody who wrote it is qualified to advise a couple, and it does not pretend otherwise. What it can do is clear a night, furnish it properly, and make it slightly harder for two people to spend another evening on separate screens.
